  • Don't stay too long being a generalist - There is this Farmer in the Cropping game who, at the tender age of 30-odd (I don’t know his actual age), has become an influencer. Yer, people ask his advice on all things Cropping. How has that happened? Young people in Ag (we were all there once) start out as generalists and gradually become specialists as we get older. If you have been around the paddock a few times, then look back and think about how your Farming life has unfolded. So what happened with this young Cropping guy was that he turned specialist much quicker than most. He knew early what he wanted to do and pursued knowledge at an insatiable rate, made his mistakes early and learnt the caper backwards. So, if you want to be influential or if you want to get somewhere quickly in your industry, specialise quicker than others.
